Speech Room Organization with Bins

Do you have piles of therapy materials set aside for the week? Are your piles and stacks of materials getting mixed up and disorganized? I have found an organizational strategy that works to keep the stacks and piles organized. In a previous post, I talked about organizing your speech therapy room using Command Hooks. You can read about how to utilize that vertical space in your therapy room HERE

In this post, I am going to show you how I organize my grade-level group materials in different bins.

As many of you now know, I work on a large elementary campus and serve anywhere from 55-65 students from three years through 5th grade. As a speech-language pathologist, I try not to be an activity-hoarder, but in order to serve such a diverse caseload, I often feel like I am.

So a couple years ago, out of desperate need for order, I decided to organize my materials for the week in bins (or tubs). I purchased four red dish pans and four black dish pans from Wal-Mart. I pulled an unused shoe rack from the closet and there you go! This has been my go-to shelf every since.

I have each bin labeled by grade level with PPCD (early childhood), PK/Kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th/5th. The younger and older grades are grouped together since I typically use the same materials for these grade levels and just adapt them as needed.

Each week I pull the materials I need for and sort them in the bins. I typically have folders, manipulatives, visual schedules, books, graphic organizers, bingo daubers, dice, craft materials, etc. pulled and placed in the grade level bins. This has saved me so much time and I can easily look to see if I have everything for the week. If my first and second graders are using the same book in therapy, I can easily move it from one bin to the other for the next session.

At the end of the week, I clean out the bins, put away what I don't need and keep what I will use the next week. I try and do this on Friday afternoon or early Monday morning so that my week is well organized and everything I need is in reach and accessible.

Just in case you were wondering, the small pencil basket between the top two bins holds picture schedule cards for PPCD and PK/Kinder groups. I use a visual therapy schedule with all my younger groups, as it provides clear expectations, eases transitions, and redirects students to task. All the picture symbol cards are stored in that small thin basket.
