6 Picture Books About Winter Clothes for Speech Therapy

Winter is here! that means cold days, comfy slippers, and warm blankets. Snuggle up with a good book and share your love of reading with your students. Read alouds and repeat readings with students are the perfect way to build background knowledge, share common experiences, target multiple objectives during speech therapy sessions, and spark a passion for reading. In this blog post, I want to share with you my top 6 favorite picture books about winter clothes. (Amazon affiliate links are included)

Frogs are supposed to sleep all winter, but Froggy wants to play outside in the snow. Froggy must get dressed before he can go outside to play. Flop, flop, flop!

This cute read aloud has repetitive rhythm and rhyme that students will ask for over and over. This story is perfect for targeting basic and descriptive vocabulary, sequencing, and problem-solution.

The Mitten
Nicki drops his mitten in the snow, and one by one the woodland animals crawl in.  Snuggling up to stay warm, they stretch the mitten beyond its capacity. This classic book by Jan Brett offers a surprising and enjoyable climax for young readers to experience.

The Hat
In this companion book to The Mitten, Lisa looses her stocking cap off the clothesline. Hedgie the hedgehog gets his nose caught, and all the farm animals come around to observe the humorous chaos.

The Missing Mitten Mystery
Annie and her dog, Oscar, have a playful day in the snow. Annie looses her red mitten and uses her imagination to create exciting adventures for her mitten.

Penguins Don't Wear Sweaters
This wonderful book shares a true story of an ecological disaster. Penguins who once enjoyed swimming, fishing, and diving, now wear sweaters to protect them from the oily goo. Big boots (humans) share sweaters with the penguins until they can return to the sea.

There are so many wonderful books about winter. These picture books about winter clothing will connect with students' personal experiences, target multiple speech and language goals, support the classroom curriculum, and build language and literacy skills.
