10 Speech Therapy Goals for "The Doorbell Rang" by Pat Hutchins

The Doorbell Rang
Pat Hutchins is one of my favorite authors. Her books are rich in content and engaging for young learners. If you have not read my previous blog post, Teaching Basic Concepts Using Rosie's Walk, I recommend it as a follow-up to this blog.The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins, is written for early elementary. Activities can also be adapted for students in alternative curriculum classes needing age/grade level appropriate content. (An Amazon affiliate link is provided)

In this post, I've identified 10 target goals for The Doorbell Rang that you can encorporate in your speech therapy groups today.

  • What is a synonyms (word that means the same) for "good" in the sentence: "They smell as good as your Grandma's."

Inference Questions-
Who do you think range the doorbell after Grandma arrived with more cookies?


Association and Story Expansion-

  • Grandma made enough cookies to share. Talk about something you share with your friends. 
  • Ma baked 12 cookies to share. How many different ways can you evenly divide 12 cookies to share with your friends.

Category Inclusion-
Ma baked cookies in the oven. Think of other foods that can be baked in the oven. Think of different types of "snack" foods you like to eat.

Text-to-Self Connections-
What is your favorite type cookie? Name as many different types of cookies as you can.


The Doorbell Rang is the perfect addition to your Pat Hutchins author unit. Try a few of these hands-on activities with your students:

*taste different types of cookies or snack food and graph your favorite type

*decorate a sugar cookie with icing and sprinkles

*Compare and Contrast different types of desserts or snack foods using a Venn Diagram

*Pair this book with the popular song, "Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?" (YouTube Link Provided).
